My parents were graduate students at Southern Illinois University and one of our friends and neighbors was from Israel - I remember this vividly as the 6 day war had just ended and the Bevels were very effected by it. The wife gave my mother this pendant/pin in the early 60s in thanks for her Southern Hospitality and welcoming of them into the neighborhood. It is a gorgeous silver fililgree pendant and I have no idea what the stone is. While SIU was filled with foreign students, many of the local residents of Carbondale were not as open to them. Being from Savannah, Georgia my mother felt an affinity for any all new "blood" that moved to Carbondale. This pin has a lot of meaning and I just won't wear it.
