THE CONJURING MYTHIC COLLECTION
WHAT INSPIRES ME
The Conjuring Design Mythic Collection is the convergence of the many passions I've followed since I was a child. I have always been intrigued by hidden mysteries and the history of lost ancient cultures. I devoured books on Atlantis, Stonehenge, the Pyramids and Easter Island feeling a connection and resonance to these ancient places. I remember reading Thor Heyerdahl's classic book KON TIKI where he talks about ancient Vikings traveling by ship to the Americas hundreds of years before Columbus "discovered" America. While living in Santa Fe, New Mexico I went to a stunning exhibit showing the influence and parallels of the ancient Tibetan people and the Hopi Tribe of the Americas. The similarities ranged from hairstyles to adornment to creation myths. The scholar who gave the lecture gave clear evidence that the Tibetans indeed traveled to what is now North America and emerged in history as the Hopi. There is a such a richness of story, connection and wild mystery in our world and I love tapping into it.
I am forever inspired in all ways by the Exoticism Movement of the 1920s. When I read my first book on Art Deco design I was in my 2nd year of designing. I remember gasping out loud as I saw ethnically inspired clothing created by Paul Poiret, Sonia Delaunay, Madeleine Vionnet and many other designers. I had found my tribe at last. This movement drew its inspiration from the mythical Orientalism of China and Japan. Poiret drew from African and Egyptian inspired motifs as well as peasant designs from Russia.
I created this collection drawing from the cultures and stories that have inspired me for the past 50 years. There is a great power in the integration of intentional home and personal adornment. My husband, award winning filmmaker, David Floeter, has created with gorgeous photography, tableaus that show the collection in various combinations. We will have rotating themes like "Dragons and Ravens" and "Mermaids and Metamorphosis" with these powerful themes integrated into the interiors, handbags, jewelry and clothing that we will offer. I am especially intrigued with the ritual of the cocktail and have been collecting wonderful cocktail sets from all over the world. The Art of the Drink is so underrated! We have been playing with libation recipes drawing from ancient Egypt, the Druids and Celts and many other cultures. Many drinks were created for fertility, health, abundance and my favorite of all aphrodisiacs. You haven't arrived until you've had a Mythic Martini! Recipes are included in the purchase of our Vintage Barware and we are publishing a book of Mythic Libations which will be done by the holidays. And rest assured - we have many alcohol free recipes as well.
THE LOST ANTLER GODDESS SOCIETY
My collaborator and friend, Sonja Roberts gifted several women with a pair of antler headdresses on our last cruise. We decided to wear them on formal night to see what the reaction would be. I was actually blown away by the response we got. The men were really intrigued. And yes, we got comments like "nice rack", but most of the women and men were startled then enticed by our headwear. One woman in the bathroom with me said, "My God that's Mythic looking!" And so it went. We were the ship sensation. Ironically there was a large contingent of the Red Hat Society on the ship too. They wore their red and purple hats with verve and laughter. Our antlers I realized seemed to be seething with power and sensuality. People wanted to know who we were and why we were wearing these evocative antlers.
One woman asked what the antlers were about and I told her we were in the Antler Goddess Secret Society. She asked what the secret society was and I told her I hadn't decided yet. But of course -- little did I know that Sonja being Finnish knew exactly what they were. And so a whole new magical realm is opening up for us with the The Lost Antler Goddess Society. When the store officially opens in July you'll get a peek into what is the NEXT for us Magical, Mythical Metamorphic Women.
