I have been invited to be a part of a show at the Osborn Woods Gallery Exhibit called RESPOND. This exhibit explores social, environmental and cultural vocabulary in the hopes to incite the viewer to respond, react, and question their community environments. Throughout my life I have been captivated and intrigued by ancient cultures and forgotten stories. These themes have been woven into my many lives as an archaeology student, author, publicist, documentary filmmaker and art to wear designer.
I created a collection of totemic bags for the RESPOND Show using images of two powerful and iconic women who have influenced me in my own journey. One woman from the East,12th Century Japanese Female Samurai, Tomoe Gozen, who has been all but forgotten by history and a woman from the West, Frida Kahlo, loved and remembered through many lenses for her transformational creativity.
My collection draws on the power, strength and transformative energies of these two women through images created in collaboration with artists and designers.
I chose the medium of a tote bag as I find it very powerful to carry these women with us at our side.
This is #16 in the "FRIDA KAHLO" Collection. BLACK & WHITE is a bag is made from black canvas and trimmed in handwoven Guatamalan Ikat textiles. The Frida Focal is an artist collage. The bag is 20" wide, 15" tall and 6" deep. The tote bag has a zipper closure and a pocket inside. The reverse side of the bag continues with the Silk Road Textile. It has 30" long leather handles. Price includes $7.50 shipping.
